Question:
I am looking into buying an acoustic guitar. but there is one problem i have never played before. I have read a few books and would like to give it a shot. But I don't want to spend that much money on something that I don't know if I liked or not. I was just curious if someone could let me know where to find cheap (but good) guitars and any idvice for someone who is getting started.
Answer:
Get one that feels comfortable to hold when you're sitting down. Unless you're very tall then this probably means avoiding Dreadnought/Jumbo size guitars, which unfortunantely rules out about 95% of steel-string guitars. But feeling physically comfortable with the guitar makes a heck of a difference to how long you'll want to play it for. At least try some different sizes. Martin 000 size guitars are great, but very expensive. Their far-Eastern subsidiary, Sigma, have done a reasonable model the same size, though, and Yamaha have done various models this size over the years. There's one for sale near me at present for £99 second hand. Takamine, too. Buy second-hand in preference to new - most guitars get to sound a lot better after a few years' playing.
