Question:
I know nothing about guitars but my teenage daughter would like one and I wondered if you could suggest a starter package, either bought as a pack or as individual items.
Answer:
One thing I'd definitely recommend for a starter (and a girl for that matter) is a guitar with a reasonably low action and light guage strings, since starting on a guitar can be pretty tough on the fingers. One of my guitars is a Gibson SG copy by a company called Westfield, and to be honest since I only paid just over a ton for it on Ebay, it's not a bad guitar at all. ie: decent finish, fingerboard, machine heads don't slip out of tune too easily, sounds OK, etc. In fact, just had a look on Ebay, and there's a Westfield SG package, complete with amp, tuner & bag.. and even a girly in the pic too! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=47074&item=3... I'd go a little against what's been mentioned already and find a decent beginners pack. A nice guitar will be something to feel proud of and an incentive to play. I've know too many kids who could have been really good give up because they play shat guitars. You don't need to spend the earth, but there's no way in hell I'd go NEAR argos for a guitar and would also avoid Westfield like the plague too - You'll be lucky if it plays across the neck without needing a fret job...I've not played one yet that's been even vaguely good... Check out www.guitars.co.uk - they are a very beginner-focused site (perhaps too much, but that's another story!). Have a poke around there and you can always call the shop - Ask for Rich (the owner) or Woz (the manger) and they'll see you right
