Question:
Am replacing the bridge pickup in a James Burton Tele with a Rio Grande Bucker with split-coil tapping....noticed the body was factory routed so I got to thinking..how should I wire this in order to split with a push/pull pot...should pot be at vol or tone position?...bare&green are earth/white&red are the split wires/this leaves a black wire that had gone to the lug of the vol pot of the neck pu in Les Paul...where does this go in relation to wiring with a tele pu selector switch and push/pull setup.......had another LP wired for split years ago...humbucking position was with knob pulled up...repairman said this was how it had to be but I had wanted the reverse setup...with the split being in the up(pulled) position... is he right or just didnt want to re-do it???...Have looked around the web and didnt find any wiring diagrams to fit my needs. also, I will need a new pickguard...anybody know where I can order a pearloid white one??
Answer:
www.stewmac.com has the pickgueards and numerous info pages about guitar wiring. Which pot you use for the switch is just a matter of preferance. The tone nob may be the best choice, keeping it out of your way when it is pulled. As for the wiring, I'm assuming when you say the white & red are the split wires that they are curently soldered together for series. For switching to parallel, you will need to wire the switch so that one of those 2 wires switches to ground, the other to hot. My best guess would be red to hot, white to ground. To switch to a single coil wire it so that only one of the wires completes a circuit. Check out the links below, they will help you understand the different wiring configuations. You will just need to find so info on the Rio wire color codes to determing which are the coil starts and ends. Couple of tips - before you start, draw up a schematic of how it is wired now. If all fails, you can at least restore it. 2nd - be careful not to overheat the push pull pot. They are much easier to overheat than standard pots.
