Question:
How much are used ones of these going for in the states? I'm not sure I would ever buy a guitar I hadn't played first, but they seem to be a hell of a lot cheaper than in England, where American models are still rare.
Answer:
You can still find them for dirt cheap prices compared to some of the outrageous prices that some people are asking. I see Soloists from $400-$650 all the time. I picked up three different 1986 San Dimas strat bodied ones with bolt-on necks (yes, they were US made), from $300-$450 with cases, I have passed up a US Rhoads V within the last 6 months at $450 with case, a 1987 Jackson for $250 with case (San Dimas bolt-on), and have a friend who bought a 1984 US Charvel for $240. You just have to know where to look for them, get contacts, and especially, here in the states, check out your local pawn shops. Seems in most areas, other than California, these show up in pawn shops all the time and the shops don't know how to tell a US one from an import. I have gone to guitar shows, and the dealers didn't even know how to tell them apart. I don't know how you'd go about searching for a good deal on one over there, but in the states, it just takes some searching and some patience. Last year, a dealer friend of mine bought a San Dimas Jackson with case at a pawn shop before a guitar show for $250 in Atlanta. They are definitely out there. Hope this helps. Just wanted to let you know that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a US Jackson. Just be patient.
