Question:
I am not trying to start a Martin vs Taylor flame war again. This is a serios post! I am contemplating buying a Martin D-42 because I like the Martin tone but I am rather fond of the feel of the Taylor necks. My question is: can Taylor make a custom dreadnaught with select woods that will rival the tonal qualities of the D-42. I am interested in remarks from experienced people who know about how Martin and Taylor go about making their guitars and the sound quality things like the Martin forward shifted braces. I understand that changes the way the sound board responds.
Answer:
I really think that when you're looking at guitars such as the D4X series, it doesn't really matter to much which one you have in your hands. They all sound great. I just happen to associate with some fine folks who are far more discerning than I, and they have a particular liking for the D42, in some cases even more than D45s. That prompted me to try to discover what it is about the D42 that makes it so good, and so I have been learning about the differences between the D42 and the D45. When I first played a D42, I had my Clapton on order, and I almost changed my order to a D42. This particular one was neglected and forlorn in a Guitar Center with the deadest strings I have ever heard on a Martin (well, actually there was this '58 000-18 a couple years ago...) and despite all that, this D42 had tone just dripping off the fretwires.
