Question:
Where to start? I wanted more than anything, a new D'Angelico Excel, have been researching this guitar online for sometime. and was read to to make an on-line order with jhale.com. In the process of checking-out I noticed that Jhale also sold D'Angelico guitars online (eBay). So I had a look and found many D'Angelico Excel on eBay; then I saw THE guitar, it was the EXL-1DP, this is a 200 guitar limited edition model. It was drop dead beautiful and in fact the same price as the new Excel $1700 + shipping. I live in Israel so I have to buy on-line. I looked at the pictures and had many email conversations with the seller, I later found out that the seller was connected with Hoboken Vintage guitar, New Jersy. The seller told me the guitar was given to him as a gift and cound NOT provide me with additional information. I was seeking to verify the guitar was in fact a TRUE D'Angelico EXL-1DP. I was somewhat worried but put my trust in this, because he was associated with Hoboken Vintage guitars in New Jersy. I asked for the serial number and after several days he tells me the Serial number is KS05060009. It is a 2005 model. I then made contact with Gary Bruno VP of D'Angelico and asked him to verify that the serial was in fact was a D'Angelico sn. He would not verify, Then I contacted Ghruhn Guitar and received no answer. MY Problems: 1. Can anyone help to verify the serial number? 2. The pictures did not propley repsent the guitar, When I recived the guitar, the fret board was completly scratched. Not a square inch without a scratch. the previous user must have used an AXE for a pick. I have owned many fine guitars and have never seen a pickguard in such condition. PLEASE TELL ME, EVEN WITH HEAVY USE, does your pickguard have heavy wear? 3. the Grover Imperial tuners are Sloppy and I cannot get good intonation. maybe 4 frets. 4. Seller said I can have strings of my choice, Just call Joe at the store.(Hoboken Vintage guitar). 201-222-8977 I wanted 013-057 round recieved guitar with Flat wound 012-???. WHAT are string of choice for a guitar of this type. Please make suggestions. 5. Were (are) D'Angelico guitars made in Incheon, Korea? 6. Should a guitar described as below have the problems I have described. I understand its BUYER be aware on ebay.
Answer:
I suspect, but can't prove that there was some funny business in the sale of this guitar, however I own it now (bought and paid for) and it plays and looks fine. If there was 'funny business' I have no idea what it actually was or where or when it occured. With no label and serial number, what can one do? So.... again, buyer beware. This was not a very expensive guitar, however if you are dropping a few grand, you have to be extra careful.
