Question:
Been playing bass for 9 years, after playing guitar for 16 years or so. I consider myself pretty competent, started out on a Fender P-bass, made in mexico, nice bass, really, love the feel of it. But now I want to take it the next level, and buy a really nice bass guitar with a budget of about 1000 US dollars, give or take 200. I want a really beautiful bass that has a versatile tone control, and smooth fretting.....I have some basses in mind to be sure, but I was wondering what people's second bass guitar purchase was . . . . which bass took you to another level of playing, recording-wise and performance wise . I am saving my cash . . . .I want a really sleek bass.......help me ..... help me..... I love the bass guitar!!
Answer:
My first 4 string on getting back into bass was an SX PJ style clone; very decent for the low price and I still have it as a backup. My second - and currently #1 player - is an Am Deluxe P bass (black with red-black peraloid pickguard - looks classy IMO). I really like the humbucker at the bridge, and the active tone controls add versatility way beyond the standard P bass - yet it can still pack that gutty, pure P-bass thump when I want. The fretwork's great on mine, and I like the tad extra room near the nut on the P neck. My first 5 string - a Schecter Stiletto Elite; for my second, I'm currently lusting after a Music Man Bongo 5, but totally lack the cash!
