Question:
I am looking for someone who might know how good of an idea it would be to run my amp through another power amp in hopes of increasing my power. I have a Fender super 60 watt rack head and it doesn't seem to power large cabs very well even though it has 4 and 8 ohm jacks. Since I have joined a metal band, all of a sudden i need earplugs....and HUGE volume. I want to drive 2 4x12's and I use plenty of crunch. If so, what do people recommend (setup and power amp type)? What kind/size of amplifier should i seek (makes, solid state/tube, how many watts)? I heard that it is bad for an amp, to have it on without having a speaker hooked up to the speaker jacks. If I run out of my line out into the amp, is this not the same thing? Maybe i have gotten some bad information here. Lastly, what kind of sound will I get??? Would a solid state amp kill my primary tube sound? Maybe somebody has dabbled with this stuff. I'd like to buy a triple rectifier
Answer:
I have used guitar amps with power amps for 20 years!!!! Just hook the line out, or the effects out to the power amp input. Set the slave amp at 0 volume and set the sound of you main amp. Then bring the slave up to the volume of you main amp. You can use a combo amp or a designated power amp. Peavey makes, or made a 50/50 stereo tube amp. This you can find cheap. Also, Boogie and Marshall both make stereo tube power amps. You do not want to run a tube amp without a speaker. Well, maybe you do, but it will trash your amp. But, my best advice is to get a professional amp. A 100 watt all tube amp by Marshall, Boogie, Carvin, HiWatt, Wizard, etc.
