Question:
A coworker asked me (a git fiddle player) what he should buy for his daughter to practice her electric cello on. I said full stack 1000 watt Marshalls....and make sure that they go to 11. But seriously what do I tell him? I guess a solid state acoustic guitar amp might work.
Answer:
An acoustic guitar amp would be better than an electric guitar amp, but they're still often voiced specifically for guitars. You really need something that is full range and not biassed towards a particular instrument. Check out the 'Acoustic Image' amplifiers. http://www.acousticimg.com/ The AI combo's sound very much like whatever instrument you are playing through them, from upright bass to violin. Cello's sound great through one of these. The other option would be to get a single active/powered PA speaker, such as a Mackie SRM 450.
