Acoustic amp/ PA or Electric Amp????? Bose PAS L1

Tagged As: Behringer Acoustic Amp

Question:
First what are the differences between an acoustic amp and a regular electric guitar amp? Would it sound OK to play an electric guitar through an acoustic amp or PA by first going through a pedal such as a KORG A5 or the newer line of modeler pedals with effects and wah? I've been looking at an acoustic amp, Behringer acx 1000 used at 175.oo. A lot of power stereo 60 watt amps and a great price compared to what I have been able to find in acoustic amps. Read some decent reviews. I'll be playing an inside show, a benefit for cerebral palsey, with a friend the end of the month. He will be using a Paul Reed Smith and Amp. And I was wanting to accompany him with my acoustic/electric. I have a small Vox 15 amp and a DOD that I think is a 60 watt. The DOD has a very clear CLEAN channel but the vox does not. I was also wondering about a small 100 to 150 watt PA system instead of the acoustic amp. I have seen them priced from 399 to 650. If I went with the PA would I then need monitors??? I don't think I will be playing out very often, but then again who knows? Maybe I woudl really like to. The acoustic amp is by far the cheapest route, but it only has 2 imputs. If I ever wanted to have 2 guitars running and a Mic then I guess I would need a PA then Huh?

Answer:
I'd look into the reliability and ability to repair such an amp. IMHO, Behringer amps are landfill waiting to happen. You might consider a used keyboard amp. They are designed for full range reproduction. In essence, they are like a small self-contained PA. I don't care for modeling, but I've owned a couple of different Digitech RP models (bought used, gave as gifts, but tinkered with each for a week or so). Using cab emulation, they sounded BETTER on my little keyboard amp than on my vintage Marshall. You can often find BEEFY used Peavey keyboard amps for CHEAP. And they will be WAY more powerful and reliable than that Behringer. I'm currently playing my acoustic/electric through my Peavey Bandit 112 (I switch between acoustic and electric all night with the band I play with) and it works fine, but if you're talking about a gig like this, I second the idea of running the acoustic straight through the P.A.. I played an acoustic duet back in Minnesota using a Kustom Profile One portable P.A....has 5 channels and 100 watts. We ran 2 vocal mics and 2 acoustics through it with no problems at all. Plus everything loaded into a rolling suitcase so setup/teardown was a matter of minutes.

The Behringer ACX1000 is a way cool amp. It's just not very loud. I think they make a bigger model now. I've heard complaints about Behringer's quality control, but I've had 4 of their amps, and only problem I had was a weak 12" speaker in one of their combos. I have lots of spare speakers, so it wasn't a big deal for me. One note of caution: buy from an authorized dealer only, or warranty support just won't happen. Don't know if they will last a long time like more expensive amps.
