Question:
The Tech21 Landmark 60 Bass Combo amplifier appears (from specifications) to be a light (in weight) combo that I could use to drag around for band practice purposes. I know there are more powerful bass combo amps, but many of those are heavier. What I don't know about this one (60 watts, 10 inch speaker) is if it's going to be loud enough for practice sessions with a 5 piece band or for small club usage (no direct to PA). If there's something that any of you all use that's roughly in the same weight range (36 pounds) with more power, I'd like to know about it.
Answer:
May I suggest buying a Behringer BX3000T bass head and a 2x10 or 1x15 enclosure? It should be about the same cost if you don't get carried away with brand nameitis with the enclosure. With this arrangement, you will have to make two trips from the car instead of one, but neither trip will strain the back that much and you will have three times the capability as the amp you are considering. From my limited experience playing rock stuff with other musicians, 100 watts through a 10 was not enough to be heard effectively. I solved the problem by getting a combo unit of sufficient power to leave where we rehearse (a friend's basement studio) so as to avoid the whole hassle of carting equipment around. It's a Peavy TNT 130 and I paid under $150 for it from a used place. When I do live stuff (pretty infrequent), I'll use my smaller combo for an extra monitor for myself and run everything through a PA.
