A neighbor, 14 year old, wants to take up guitar and asked for guidance. As is usually the case, he (and his dad) don't want to spend more the about $250 on the guitar. I quickly talked them out of an electric starter package and confirmed that he will be taking lessons. Any thoughts on a good make/model/style for the kid? All help?

, go with what the kid wants to do, as he is more likely to stick with it. After all, playing anything is a lot better than playing nothing. Most 14yos would be able to a full size guitar without any problem. I would get advice from the teacher, but there are plenty of decent oriental guitars to choose from, Fender, Ibanez, Alvarez, Cort, Yamaha etc. For a beginner, I think that good setup and playing comfort are *much* more important than tone or life expectancy of the guitar.
