Best Pre SVT Bass Amp

Tagged As: Svt Bass Amp

Question:
How 'bout the Acoustic 360? If memory serves me well, I believe it predates the SVT by a year or two. There was also the Kustom 200 with 3x15 JBL's, but it's not in the same class as the Sunn or the Acoustic. The most popular bass amp in the pre-SVT days was the Fender Bassman, but at 50 watts it was too puny to keep up with most guitar amps of the day. Anyone else old enough to vote on the best pre SVT bass amp?

Answer:
I have vote for the trusty old Fender Dual Showman's and their dual 15 JBL D140-F powered cabinets. I remember in the early sixties when Fender increased the cabinet size by about 30%(maybe to compete with Vox Super Beatles?). No significant increase in performance, harder to lug around, but they sure looked Coollllll! I am still using the D-140F's out of a Showman cabinet I bought new in 1967. Lost the cabinet in a fire 23 years ago but the speakers survived intact (talk about smoke-impregnated equipment!).

Best pre-SVT bass amp? Has to be the Kustom 200 with 2- 15" JBL d140's. You really need to run two of these in tandem to get the full effect-it is quite AMAZING. Three is even better!

Traynor made a "pre SVT" bass amp. I think it was about 250 watts, all tube. Rumour has it that Ampeg used it as the inspiration for the SVT.
