Question:
I am considering getting one of these to learn a few simple classical tunes. Anyone out there who has experience with this guitar wants to share pros and cons? Also, what about guitar lessons vs. learning by books, for a beginner who plays a bit of piano and violin already?
Answer:
It's great guitar. Solid cedar top. Nicely playable (at least the one I have, and the couple other I've played). I think the latest ones have solid sides and back (or perhaps just a solid back), but earlier ones are laminate Indian rosewood. A well-built, good-sounding guitar that will serve you way beyond learning a few simple classical pieces. I would say it is adequate up to the serious student level, and the need for a true concert quality instrument. Even then, it can be your backup guitar for situations where you don't want to risk a concert instrument. The H-5 is certainly on par with a Ramirez R or E series (well better than the low-end ones, but not as good as the R4 or E4). Cons: At least new, it is perhaps not the best value on the market. At a street price of $1200-1300 (list is $1849), you aren't that far off from a Kenny Hill, or other all-solid instruments from Mexico or Spain. Resale is often not great (but that is a pro if you are buying used). If you want to play classical, I'd recommend lessons, but there are tons of good books and videos out there.
