Question:
I'm a guitarist who pretends to be a bass player 1/4 of the time and I recently purchased my first good quality bass. Previously I'd been playing something quite awfull, and because of that never bothered to get a decent amp; I just played through my guitar amp (quietly) and used the ubiquitous V-Amp to record with. Anyway, I'm playing bass a lot more now, and I'd like to get hold of a small amp for practising and recording. From what I've found, the options in my price range (sub£300) for 1 speaker bass combos are: Fender Bassman 25 (looks well featured and has an output I can use for recording with) Laney RBW-100 (I like the wedge design and have found laney's to be well built) SWR LA-8 (The LA-15 got a good write up in guitarist magazine) Carlsbro Bassbaby (I have a carlsbro Guitar amp and I am more than happy with it - hopefully the bass amps are just as good) Hartke Kickback 10 (can't find a price for this) Are the B-series combos any good? Can anyone comment on any of these or offer any alternatives?
Answer:
If you can find one, there is a small blue carpet covered amp called a Yorkville Bass Master 50. I think it was about £260 or so. I was amazed at how like a bigger amp it sounded. No boxiness, plenty of Thump. I use a Trace combo for gigging, and a horrible Marshall B25 MkII for the living room (working songs out, etc) and this thing sounded a lot more like the Trace than the Marshall ! YMMV I don't have any connection with Yorkville, I just missed the chance to buy one S/H
