Advice on Fender Twin Reverb amp

Tagged As: Fender Twin Reverb Amp

Question:
A guy is selling a used 1967 Fender Twin Reverb. He says it has Altec speakers in it that appear to be replacements. Are these speakers good -? From what I know Twins usually had Jensens or JBLs .... how would the Altec speakers compare with the traditional Fender Twin sound -? What else should I ask him about _?

Answer:
I've seen BF TRs going for $900-$1200. I don't think I'd pay that much for one. A few years ago I played a BF TR w/ Altec speakers. It was going for about $700 but it wasn't the sound I was looking for. Given inflation in vintage amp prices over the last few years it wouldn't surprise me to see a $1000 price tag on it now. I think the Altecs were considered an upgrade for a Twin, kind of like the JBLs were. The question is whether you like the sound of the amp and whether it's in pretty good shape. Another post seemed to imply that the amp isn't worth much because it's so old. I don't think I agree with that. So I guess what I'm saying is that $1000 for a BF Twin Reverb doesn't seem too far out of line and the Altecs don't take too much away from the value of the amp. Given that, I'd me more inclined to find a SF TR for a fraction of that price and spend some money on fixing it up, e.g., BF mod, recap, new tubes if necessary, new speakers if you don't like the ones it came with.
