Question:
I may be buying a vintage Fender Twin Reverb soon, but i read that some of these vintag Fender amplifiers can have as many as 11 vintage tubes. I'm new to vintage equipment, but i KNOW that something like that will cost a fortune to maintain. How many tubes does a 73 Fender Twin Reverb have? Also, how much would it cost to change these tubes to ones that or comparable?
Answer:
A Twin Reverb has ten tubes...four 12AX7s, two 12AT7s, and four 6L6s. If you don't use the NORMAL channel (most people don't) you can eliminate one of the 12AX7s when it's re-tubing time; you also don't need to replace the tremelo oscillator tube, which is a 12AX7. The other two 12AX7s and the two 12AT7s will need replacement. So will the power tubes. In my catalog, you can spend between $74 and $164 for the 8 tubes I mentioned above, depending on your brand choices. If you get good stuff to begin with, and have the amp biased correctly, you won't have to re-tube again for several years.
