Question:
I've been checking out the Ampeg tubes for the past few weeks and just love them. Either one I play, from the little tremelo clean model to the super reverb just sounds awesome. Then, I spend a little free time at GC today lookin' around and decide to sit in front of a used Fender super reverb. It was about $799, more than the biggest Ampeg could be had new. It sounded okay, but I wasn't about to walk away with it. I'm just surprised how much the employee LOVED this amp. Sure, he wants me to buy it, but still, he insists it's the number one selling guitar amp in the country. Give me a break? What are your thoughts? How do you think they compare?
Answer:
First off, GC employees aren't known for knowing what they're talking about. Second, nothing that you can buy new is a real Ampeg. It's a Crate, wearing the Ampeg nametag. That doesn't mean that it's sound won't be exactly what you need, but be forewarned, because a genuine Ampeg is the real deal, what's being sold these days.... isn't. BUT!! That being said, Fender no longer builds amps the same as they did in the '50s, '60s, or '70s. A new Super Reverb isn't build even close to how the original was built. I haven't made the comparison. You're the one who has to do that. Nobody else can tell you which amp suits your needs the best.
