I agree. If you really are into the stereo thing, two 1x12 combos are really the cat's patootie. The two 12s in a 2x12 combo are just too close together to give you any appreciable separation unless you have your nose nearly touching the grille cloth. Stereo with a guitar is a bit contrived to begin with. Opinions vary, but true stereo guitars are rather underwhelming, and therefore rare, but stereo chorus and delay fx off of any guitar can be very nice if the speakers are separated. Having separate 1x12 amps may be a bit more expensive, but they allow you an infinite array of placement possibilities; an amp to fall back on if one craps out; and splits the carry load pretty much in half (2x12 combos can be a bit of a pain to move).
