Question:
i'm pretty new to all the electric guitar gear... but i'm planning on getting an amp.... the marshall jcm2000 tsl 122 combo caught my attention because they say that it includes the jcm2000 tsl 3 channel head and combined it with two 12 inch speakers for a combo? it costs a lot but i'm wondering if i should get this because.. in the future i want a stack i guess.. but will getting this combo amp be a waste? or could i just add a speaker cabinet later on and use the combo amp as the head since htey say it contains a 3 channel head? or should i just go ahead and try to save up for a regular marshall head and a speaker cabinet? or can i just go ahead and by the tsl combo and use it as a head later
Answer:
If you want a stack eventually, I would buy the head only version. You could pick up a 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet in the meantime and when you get a 4x12 use the smaller cabinet for practice so you don't have to tote that 4x12. The 122 is damn heavy and the speakers in the open back cabinet really don't sound very good with that head. The head sounds much better through a 4x12 cabinet. Before you buy, compare the TSL100 to the Mesa Rectifier series. They are very different, but you may find that you like one better than the other. The Marshall has a better clean tone, but the Mesa Rectifier's distortion crushes the TSL100. To each his own, I guess.
