Marshall JCM 800 combo

Tagged As: Marshall Jcm 800 Combo

Question:
Does anybody have any experience about Marshall´s 4104, it´s a JCM800 series 2x12 50w tube combo?? I´m looking for the classic marshall sound ala acdc, unfortunately I´m not able to go & try it out myself at this point. There´s one for sale, the price is around 400 - 450$ and I´m thinking about getting it as my secondary amp.

Answer:
Bought a mid 80's (s Serial#) 4103 several months back. Sounded horrible but price was right. Found that when it was converted to EL34's many years ago resistor wasn't changed (thanks Lord Valve for the tip), bias was way off. Replaced resistor, all tubes, 3 pots and like was mentioned earlier filter caps which were shot. Very nice sounding amp now. Only complaint's are, is finicky on preamp tubes when using it as a combo, not an issue when playing it thru 4x12 cabinet. Haven't had any problems since switching to JAN Phillips tubes and like mentioned earlier, it is heavy. I'm not up on prices but I wouldn't consider selling this amp for $400 and the 4104 would be worth more than it is.

I bought a 100 watt version of this, the Marshall 4103 JCM800 back in jan-03. had kevin at uncle alberts in indianapolis go through it and fix the cap/diode issue with the conversion to EL34 tubes. I love this amp and would love to have another. in 03 i was lucky enough to pay only $650 for it. I see them for around $1000 now (2007). I can get ac/dc sounds with it as well as classic rock. the single channel jcm 800s are some of the best amps ever, imho...
