Question:
I am looking for recommendations on a good basic beginners learn to play the guitar book that is also geared towards learning to play the blues.
Answer:
Find someone whose playing you enjoy and ask them to show you the Jimmy Reed riff on the bass strings. It will involve stretching your fingers. But learn it in E, A, and a barre position like G. And practice it constantly. And ask them to show you how to count bar lines for the chord changes. That's real important. If you learn the Jimmy Reed riff (or the walking bass as some call it), you'll have killed three or four birds with one stone -- you'll have your fingers stretched, you'll know where the changes are, and you'll be able to accompany other people. The last is important. I'm no virtuoso but a few people have asked me to teach them. I'm no good at it. But I also think that most people only want to learn how to play lead -- and until they learn to hear the chord changes their leads make no sense.
