Mesa Boogie Studio pre-amp

Tagged As: Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp

Question:
Please tell me something about The old Mesa Boogie studio pre-amp. Pray tell me about it, o knowledgeable ones...

Answer:
Bought one in 1992, it drove me mad and I didn't like the sound, the two channels were always out of balance volume wise, the tone controls interacted in a very strange way making it very hard to use live and the sound was crap, I was running it straight into the PA system which could have been the reason it sounded like a bee in a tin can. I sold it after 4 months to a guy who still uses it to this day and thinks it's the best amp he's ever had (he's also running it straight into a PA but with a few other gizmos) and I have to admit he gets a good sound where I couldn't. I now use a Marshall JMP-1 pre amp and that does everything I want, good sound and easy to use.

I've had a mesa studio preamp for 5 years and I can tell you that it sounds great through a tube power amp like the simul 2:90 and a 4X12 cab. The linked channels take a little getting used to but can give you great lightly broken cleans to growly or creamy musical distortion depending on your guitar, pickup selection etc... Don't just plug it into a P.A. by itself, it will sound terrible! It's five 12AX7 preamp tubes don't shape a sound that is designed for solid state amps and 15" speakers!
