Question:
I'm 33 and though I play bass for many years, I must admit that I've never tried or even listened to an all Valve head for bass. (I could say that in France (where I live) , we don't have so much stuff in the shops than you could have in USA, but that's another problem) So here are my questions: 1. I've played mainly on Eden (WT 400+) and SWR (Redhead), which are valve preamp and solid state amp, so, could you explain me the kind of sound an all Valve head can produce , compared to these references that are Eden and SWR? I've been told that solid state produce more dynamic than valve? What about slap? better with which system? Is it true that 100W Valve = 200W Solid State ? (more or less) 2. Do you know and use the MesaBoogie Walkabout head? I'm intersted by this thing though I thought MesaBoogie was a guitaramp specialist but maybe I mistake. Tell me about this stuff and how you consider the brand for bass?
Answer:
The Mesa-Boogie Walkabout is not terribly different from the Eden WT-400 you already have experience with: tube pre-amp, solid state power section. It's 13 lbs, after all. Mesa-Boogie has always made some of the finest bass amps in the world, in addition to its guitar amps. It just doesn't offer many different models. Mesa-Boogie bass enclosures are also quite excellent.
