Question:
I have a line on an early 80's Peavey Combo 300 bass amp that's like new. It has an 18 inch Blackwidow speaker. I will being playing a Fender Precision Lite thru it. This bass has a lot of funk to it. Will this be a good combination for early rock and blues?
Answer:
I had a Peavey Combo 300 years ago.It was an okay amp.Nothing special. The amp I remember had a strange thing going on in the midrange that I could never seem to EQ out.Anyway, after a few years of use, my Combo 300 just shut down one day at a rehearsal with the Rock band that I was playing with at the time.I brought the amp into a tech and he told me that I blew the power transformer along with a few other things. He told me that it looked as if I was pushing the amp too hard. It was really not worth fixing....too expensive.I agreed.I took the 115 Black Widow out and put it in another cabinet and sold my Peavey Combo 300 for parts. I started using my SWR Studio 220 combined with the Peavey 115 speaker cabinet from that point on untill I bought a full SWR rig.I do not miss the Peavey Combo 300 one bit. It's not like the Combo 300 was terrible but it wasn't anything special either. If I was going to buy a combo amp today,it would be the Ampeg 100R.
