Which Guitar Amp (and Gear) is awesome for traditional 70's Funk? Please help me!

Tagged As: Virtual Guitar Amp

Question:
After long time, I want to make music again and I face a problem: which amp sounds dry enough for funk (80%) and gives, nevertheless, a warm sound for Soul(20%)? Although I will surely irritate all tube fetishists now, traditionally I would have to take a Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus - the funkiest Amp ever, isn't it? But my heart tends towards a Mesa Boogie because I had one earlier too, that would also surely gives the warm and creamy sound for the (less) soul part. At other place, I have heard some hints about Fender Amps. What about them? Or should I maybe use the JC-120 for a clean sound and an additional Tube Preamp for a warmer sound? What about a Virtual Guitar Amp Processor? Is this still blasphemy? What shall I make? Which amplifier would you recommend? I am helpless and not sure... I do not want to minimize deficiencies of the Amps with a lot of effect devices

Answer:
I'm not a guitar player, but a bass player. I hear what you're saying about finding a good amp before wiring your guitar through preprocessor or simulator. I know a guitar player I worked with before who used a Mesa Boogie and liked it. I'm not really familiar how the other amps sound for guitar, as I'm a bass player Do some more reading on some of your fav guitar players to see what kind of pedals and effects they use. Most guitar players that use an effects device choose to use one not because of a deficiency in the amp, but to add something to the already good sound. My example from personal experience is a quality overdrive pedal. No problem if you want to play plugged straight into the amp, no problem if guys want to use effect pedals. If it works, it works. It's an individual thing, but no blanket statement that infers that because someone uses an effects pedal that their amp is deficient is going to fly very far.
