Yamaha Amplifier (old) problems

Tagged As: Yamaha Amplifier

Question:
Recently I've noticed that high frequency sound comes out of one speaker even with the volume turned all the way down. I've swapped the speakers over to make sure it is the amp at fault. Culprit is a Yamaha A07 amplifier (approx 20 years old) Can anyone tell me why this should happen and what I can do about it.

Answer:
Are you sure both speakers are working porperly? (Swap left and right at the back of the amplifier -- does the problem move to the other speaker or stay the same?) If the speaker selector is turned off on the amplifer is the speaker then quiet? When you say high frequency do you mean a tone? Do you hear snips of a radio or TV station? Do you hear noise similar to what you hear when tuning between radio stations? A certain amount of noise is normal, even if you were never aware of it before. It's hard for us to evaluate the noise without hearing it. The novelty in this situation is that the noise seems to be louder on one channel than the other. Room noises created by heating and airconditioning, appliances, computers, etc. often mask the noise that amplifiers make. On an unusually quiet day you may hear the amplifier noise for the first time. There could also be a masking appliance closer to one speaker, causing you to think that speaker is quieter. Don't think that I'm trying to convince you that you couldn't have a problem. 20 year old units can get into lots of trouble. I've been at this a while and at least half of your sort of complaint turns out not to be an amplifier problem. Unfortunately, from here I can't tell which half you are in.
