Yamaha amp?

Tagged As: Yamaha Amp

Question:
I'm looking at getting an Amp + some speakers for my house. I'm a bit confused if right now as to whether my DVD play will not produce the goods for my amp. I'm looking at the Yamaha HTR-5550RDS. I currently have a Goodmans 2100b DVD player (el cheapo). Now my question is this. My DVD player only has L&R audio output sockets. These are currently rigged up to my Aiwa Hi-Fi. Giving me good sound (it seems like 5.1 channels to my untrained ears!)(Lfron, Rfront, Centre and two surrond) Anyhow, Would I be right in saying that I'm not going to benefit DPL,DPL2,DTS etc....with these audio output sockets on my DVD player connected to a flashy new amp?? Is my DVD player letting the team down? It doesn't have an optical output on the DVD player. Last this I want is to splach out on another DVD player to get the DPL and DTS. Afterall that another £100 at least!. Speakers/amp/DVD = alot of cash. I'd hate to fgo out and buy the amp only to find out I won't get any benefit until I upgrade my DVD player. This missus would be livid! Has any comments?

Answer:
The best you'll get from a L&R audio out is Dolby Pro-Logic. This is an analogue system and not as good as the digital DD and DTS systems. If your HiFi does DPL and DPL2 then you'll be able to get this with just the L&R audio outputs. DD and DTS require a digital out (optical or electrical) and an amp with a decoders - or a DVD player with a decoder and 5.1 pre-outs. If it has no digital outs then yes it is. You'll get DPL but not DD or DTS
