Question:
I rescued an old Yamaha 100/212 guitar amp(I think that's what it is, its not here right now) from the garbage, and i'd like to identify if its any good at all before I spend time/money fixing it. It has two channels (low, high input), high, mid, low eq, tremolo, brightness knob, distortion, and reverb. Has anybody ever heard or seen this amp before? Is it shit, is it good?
Answer:
I have one of those amps. I bought it used in 1980, and gigged with it for several years. It has been in my garage for about ten years. This summer I took it down to the local music store and asked what they would give me as tradein -- $50. Probably could get $75-$100 selling it myself if I could find anybody who wanted it, which I can't. Solid state, 100W into 4 ohms, two 8ohm spks. Reasonably good clean sound, awful distortion, reliable as hell. Potential uses: I was pondering recently on using it in a stereo setup. Alternatively, I was going to yank the spkrs and try building a 2x12 cab for my Bassman head (using 4x12 cab now) or else use them in a couple of DIY floor monitors. Any of these options is worth more than $50 to me. You will not be able to have much repair work done on it for that kind of money, unless you can DIY. You could do all sorts of things with the spkrs/cab if you are the experimenting type. Worst case, even a 2x12 open backed extension cab on casters comes in handy every so often.
