Music books and guitar chords

Tagged As:

Question:

I play guitar with enthusiasm but no skill - I can thrash a few chords and that's about it. I want to be able to play along with my albums of Hapa, Keali'i, Iz and the like (while my wife is out) and so I am looking for books with music, guitar chords and lyrics of contemporary Hawaiian music. I have looked around amazon.com and similar, but found nothing like that. Does anyone know if such books exist and, if so, where I could get one/them? (NB I am in Fiji so I am going to need somewhere that does mail order.)

Answer:

You don't need books - to play with that crowd you need 20 fingers. Ozzie Kotani and Keola Beamer (http://KeolaBeamer.com) have books and Keola has an on-line music class, too. There's a shop here in Seattle called Dusty Strings, fondly known as rusty springs, that has books and sheet music - they have both Ozzie and Keola in stock each time I'm there - I work across the street from them so I'm there a lot. http://www.dustystrings.com/ (I have no relationship with them except I buy a lot of picks and strings there). You'll find more links (and more than links) at http://mele.com, and http://huapala.org has a wonderful page of lyrics including original Hawaiian and English translations.
