Jazz Guitar Lessons SF Bay Area - Peninsula?

Question:

Well, after 2 months of agony waiting for it (without an archtop, while my '69 Epi Howard Roberts Custom sold...), today, I received my 'new' old guitar, a blonde '51 Epiphone Triumph Regent!...who knows maybe it once belonged to someone in this illustrious group... So, now I can start to follow through on my post from a while back and all the great input I received from the great group here.... While I plan to get back into playing again on my own for the moment, I'm seriously considering the idea of taking lessons to accelerate the process (although after the post earlier today about all the rules, I may be too scared to do it.. So wondering if anyone here can make any recommendations for a good jazz guitar teacher in my area?? I work on the San Francisco Peninsula in the Redwood City/San Mateo area (just down the block from the Oracle campus off Hwy 101...)and would like to find someone within a fairly close distance, maybe up to a 15 minute drive from there... So that would mean someone as far south as Palo Alto and as far north as San Mateo preferably. Otherwise, drive time will likely be too much. Might make an exception to these boundaries, but would need to have a really good reason. Anyway, feel free to contact me directly off-list if you like or post here....

Answer:

Check in with Gryphon music in Palo Alto They should have a good jazz instructor they can refer you to A few high profile local instructors are; You have Bruce Forman a little south in Santa Cruz isn't Ron Eschete in San Francisco? What about John Stowell? isn't he somewhat close? Mehling will travel to you in the bay if you are into some gypsy jazz Not knowing your current level of proficiency, it is hard to determine how advanced or high profile a teacher you desire to study with. what are your goals? What are you seeking from a teacher? Do you seek knowledge or wish to be able to say I studied with $ Do you read? Do you have a repertoire? Are there specific techniques you wish to focus on? Is there a specific sub genre you wish to immerse yourself in? Are you looking for someone to help you understand theory, or coach you and improve your performance level? You are on the right track by being part of this forum!!!!!!!!!! a lesson in itself
