Question:
I am often setting at my computer when I receive or need to make a phone call. I would love to be able to use the headset (with microphone) I have plugged into the computer to answer or make these calls. It would be so convenient to have my hands free. I have a 400mhz Intel Celeron processor with Windows 98? Is there a way to configure my system to be able to be used as my primary phone in that way? Is there a program I can download or buy? I have tried to just use the phone dialer that comes with Windows 98? It dials the number I ask it to dial, but I get no sound through my speakers and the microphone transmits nothing.
Answer:
Before you go to too much trouble, you probably need to verify that your modem has that capability. Some modems have that capability built in. Others use a sound card. Generally, if the headphone/mic plugs into the modem, your modem has the features you want. Go into Start>Settings>Control Panel and open Modems. When modems opens, click on Diagnostic, highlight your modem by clicking on it and then select More Info. The information that appears should tell you what capabilities your modem has. Also, there are some fairly inexpensive headphone-microphone sets that you get while ascertaining that the modem will work the way that you want it to.
