Question:
I have a fairly old SM58 wireless system, in which the microphone unit is intermittent. Does anybody know how to dismantle the mic unit so that I can investigate the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Answer:
Are you 100% sure that it is the transmitter? Could it be the capsule? Or perhaps a breakdown in the frequency? let's hear the problem in greater detail. While not SM58 wireless, I've had major problems with my Shure wireless mics. I've sent one Shure Beta 87 back THREE times over the past 24 months for the same problem. Each time it cost some Can$250.00 to repair and, after several months, the same problem would reoccur. Three weeks ago, it came back from repair number three, along with a Canadian $260.00 repair bill, and within days was this time giving intermittent pick up problems. (Not the same problem that it was sent in for). It's been sent back to Shure and I've had to rent, for around Can$300, another Shure Beta 87 to use for a three week run. This one microphone and receiver has cost me, of the past 24 months, some Can$750.00 in repair bills, the cost of a three week rental, and still doesn't work. I've had problems with the three other Shure Beta 87s we use as well, one is cracking around the top where the screw head is threaded into the body, another has given intermittant pick up problems (Can$250 for repair. One of their wireless headset mics has given us problems since we took it out of the box, this was traced to a faulty wiring connection in the cable from the headset to the transmitter. All in all, let's just say I'm NOT impressed with Shure Beta 87s, given that a mic and receiver run to around Can $2000 including all taxes.
