Question:
I'm new to Cubase and audio recording and I can't seem to get good recordings. I am simply plugging a mic (a Shure PG58) into my computer's mic input and trying to record to an audio track. When I monitor the track in Cubase (2.2), there is a delay of about one second between speaking into the mic and playback. Also, the recording is far too quiet. I have set my computer's microphone recording level all the way up and have also tried it with line-in, but nothing works. Any suggestions?Did I have a problem with my Pg58 Shure Microphone or with my computer?
Answer:
It sounds like you're using the soundcard that came with the computer when you bought it. That soundcard doesn't have a mic-preamp. I would suggest spending a little money on a soundcard with mic-preamps and ASIO-drivers. M-audio have some at a reasonable price. Ask in your local music store or the place you bought Cubase, and I'm sure they're willing to help you pick the solution that's best for you. The other solution would be to use a standalone mic-preamp, and plug that one into the sound card. Check out Behringer MIC-100 and MIC-200. Very nicely priced, and good enough for a start. Also Studio-Project has a mic-preamp that people talk nice about. When it comes to the latency (wich is the word used for the delay you're talking about), this is a problem with your audio-drivers. Probably there are no dedicated ASIO-drivers for your sound card, but you could try the ASIO4ALL driver at http://www.asio4all.com If you don't get the newest version to work, try an older one. I think that'll be available as well. I had some problems with the newest version the last time I tried it. If you want more tips on this, please post your soundcard make and type. This'll make it easier for people to give more accurate advice.
