Question:
A few weeks ago I loaned a Samson S-12 microphone to a local coffee shop for their open mic night... I should have known there was something amiss since they had the p.a., but their usual mic was in the shop. Anyways, long story short, some dope, after reading a painfully stupid poem about unnatural expeirences with farm animals, dunked the mic into a glass of water! Sooooo, now the mic, when dry and plugged in will only reproduce high frequencies (sounds like a bad a.m. radio) and does not push much sound. Any suggestions? Is this thing toast?
Answer:
Yeah probably, and it's probably not worth fixing. I'd tell the Coffe Shop that they owe you the money for a Neuman KMS105 or a Shure Beta 87A...that way you are least getting a lot more mic than what you had. I don't know the S12, but I had an S11 that I got free (thrown in on a purchase deal) and never used it. It sounded pretty bad. The other issue you face is Samson service, or lack thereof. I have a keyboard rack mixer (PL1602) and I have been trying for two years to get some technical info on converting the aux sends to post fader (for some stupid reason, both sends are pre fader). They don't return phone calls AT ALL, forget about email. When you call their service line all you get is a recording. I actually did talk to a person once, but he couldn't help me, gave me a name to call back and ask for and...back to the message thing. I bought the mixer as a basic thing to go in a live rig (to hook up a PC-88 and Protues Module, and an F/X unit to), part of the reason I bought the Samson was there really are no other similiar units (8 stereo channels with EQ in a rack) on the market. After my experience with their service department, I wouldn't buy a toothpick made by Samson...I've literally left 10 - 15 phone messages over two years, NONE of them ever returned, and about the same number of emails. I've not been a real pest, I just phone or email about once a month, and to date all I've gotten is one guy that didn't know anything.
