Does anyone know if the sony gun/zoom microphone reduces motor noise. Also how obtrusive is it?

Answer:
All gun / directional microphones work the same way. They have holes down the sides of a long tube to reduce noise from angles, however, this means that they usually pick up noise directly from the sides and the back. i.e.. They reduce noise coming in from a 45deg angle from the front, but do not reduce it from the sides. In fact the back is almost as sensitive as the front. So you still need to be very careful of where you place your microphone and where the noise is coming from.
