Question:
Does anybody know what the sound used in the Vintage Synth demo on rolands homepage is called? It starts about 1.05 min into the song and sounds something like an Old-school emulated pipe organ.. have anyone of you made a similar sound without the Vintage Synth exp. board? and does anyone know what it's called, and what that kind of sounds are called?
Answer:
Having played real pipe organs, I know that they're often a mix of square, sawtooth or sine-like waves with very little fundamental harmonic to them, depending on which ranks you use. Start with a basic pipe organ tone and add some string ensemble-y patch mixed at a lower level to get in the ballpark. Then try adding various more synth-y waves. If you feel your way to the sounds you prefer in this manner, you'll not only eventually get close at the very least, but it will enhance your OVERALL programming chops. many of the most interesting layered sounds I've uncovered are marvels of level-mixing as much as wildly original patche per se. A pipe organ blowing at Full Rank with a little filter sweep and tubular bell mixed in can rock HARD. Just add that thought to your tool box.
