Is there a way of turning up the synth at source (other than in the synth itself) to increase the percentage of original sound?

Question:
I have difficulty recording VST synths. since the synth sound is part of my card's output, I record it by feeding it back into my card's input (right?). Since the record level is fixed on a 2496, I need to turn it up on my mixer. Because of direct monitoring I get feedback howl. Is there a way of turning up the synth at source (other than in the synth itself) to increase the percentage of original sound?

Answer:
So turn off direct monitoring. Anyway, a VSTi can be rendered as an audio track directly within Cubase by a simple Export Audio with that track soloed. Or leave it unrendered - it's essentially an audio track already, subject to anything Cubase's audio mixer has to offer. My CubaseFAQ page www.laurencepayne.co.uk/CubaseFAQ.htm in other words, dx, there is no need to record it.. it's already in there.. with outboard midi sound modules you need to record them into your computer, with vsti's you don't.
