Question:
I have a Kurzweil KSP8 studio processor with digital ins and outs. I'm upgrading to a new DAW - a Korg D16XD or D32XD (haven't decided which yet). Does anyone know if the Korg has digital ins and outs for aux sends/ returns that will allow me to use the KSP8 processor without having to go analog? I notice the Korg does NOT have direct aux sends and returns to do that, so it's important to know. Can't determine this from any web sites... Does anyone know?
Answer:
Can you download a manual from the Korg web site? Perhaps you'll find the answer there. On digital consoles, particularly fully integrated ones like those workstations you're considering, there are often not dedicated (that is, with labels on them) connections for returns. Inputs tend to be quite flexibly routable so that's what they expect you to use. Similar for outputs - if there's an ADAT optical output, you can probably plow through some menus and connect it to a set of busses that function as auxiliary sends. The flexibility makes it possible, but you have to count your chickens and be sure that you don't run out of hole to put plugs into. Generally for mixing, you'll be OK, but for tracking, depending on how you're going into the workstation, you may run short.
