Question:
I'm a rank amateur at keyboards and am shopping for a digital piano. So far I'm down to a Yamaha P80, a Korg SP100 and a Korg SP200. The Kurzweil SP88 was a big disappointment. The SP100 seemed a little fragile, The SP200 had a nice feel to the keys and sounded better to my ears than the P80 but the P80 was the most expensive and seemed most roadworthy. Would anyone care to offer some advice?
Answer:
I assume you're looking for a gigging tool, in which case you'll have amplification sorted. If not then you're looking at the wrong tools. It's down to sound and feel, IMHO. The SP100 is usually a bit cheaper, if I remember I didn't like the feel of the hammer action, too light, and the sounds weren't really what I was looking for. I'm a confirmed P80 lover, but I remember not being exactly sure about the sounds when I first started using it. Now I think it's great but I almost always use the Jazz Piano and Strings together. My only wish is that I could have that on the right split and a bass on the left but that's too much for it to cope with. And if it had its own rhythm unit I'd be in seventh heaven. The SP200 has plenty of sounds, most of them in stereo, but did they improve on that keyboard action? A bit more money I think. If it's roadworthy and practical you want think seriously about the Yamaha. Many here have bought one (OK, maybe on my recommendation) but I haven't heard any complaints yet.
