Question:
After many years of not playing, 20+, I picked the horn back up...started practicing again...running the scales then picked up some sheet music then I remembered why I laid the horn down...I can't read a lick of sheet music.....I play everything by ear! My wife has to play it on the piano then I can look at the notes and play them...my question to the group is there anyone else with this problem ? Do I take piano lessons ? How to read sheet music lessons ?? I appreciate any feed back....

Glad you brough this topic up. I'm just a new trumpet player, but I know that, since the typical trumpet is keyed in Bb (though there are other-keyed trumpets, which are less-common among non-orchestra players), you can't just read music written for piano or another non-Bb instrument. It'd gotta be transcribed first, doesn't it? Which seems, to this new player, prohibitively complicated/time-consuming! :-( Most music stores and libraries have tons of piano music but a very limited selection for trumpet, unfortunately. I'd love to be able to play be ear, myself! What a talent! BTW, I thought that most play-by-ear instrumentalists were able to basically pick up their instrument and, with a bit of experimenting, play just about anything they wanted. Is this unrealistic?
