Question:
I don’t mean to take away from this newsgroup at all, but I was thinking about starting a newsgroup just for praise and worship music on the guitar. What do you all think? Would it be worthwhile? Do I have any supporters?
Answer:
I'd be there. I think that this music area is distinct enough to warrant a newsgroup. I support the idea. I am constantly looking for both old and new material. The group should encompass both...The groups I play for span two generations, and thus I think the music should appeal to both generations. Personally, from what I've seen, such a narrow subject is better served by starting a mailing list. The narrowly defined newsgroups don't get picked up by a lot of sysadmins, I think, and it's harder to get things going. Plus you get a lot of idiots coming in, unless it's a moderated group. Also, it's *really easy* to start a mailing list, you don't have to hold a vote or anything, just do it. Good luck. Whatever you do, I'll be around! In addition to the music itself, there are a lot of venue-specific tech problems with solutions we could discuss. Plus a host of other issues that could benefit from discussion from a special perspective (although there is certainly a great deal of diversity within praise and worship music, even if limited to the acoustic guitar - I believe there already is a group for Christian music in general). OTOH, a lot of RMMGAers already play/lead in churches (most of the 'founding fathers', in fact) and have a wealth of information they share regularly. So, I'd be visiting RMMGA just a regularly anyway. Plus the input from generally knowledgeable non-P&W sources in RMMGA is always a help. For those of you who are interested there is already an excellent praise and worship email discussion list. (OK, I'm the administrator, so I'm a bit prejudiced about the excellent label!) At one point we tried to get it set up as a newsgroup but did not get the proper support. Note that this is not limited to guitar specifically, though I'd guess that the majority of folks on the list do play guitar. You can find out more about the list at http://www.praise.net/worship/list. I'd certainly go for either, but as John said, a mailing may be easier to start with. It could always grow into being a newsgroup at a later point. There is a Christian Guitar List on Onelist. They not only cover praise and worship, but also other topics related to guitar and worship. You can go to www.onelist.com to join. I'd also like to converse with other praise band guitarists. Delicate fingerstyle on an un-amplified acoustic in an intimate coffee house is quite different from hammering out amplified chords in front of 200 singing worshipers. Topics for discussion would include composers/arrangers, equipment, setup, etc. I'd be interested in this group, also, Ian. Please let us know if and when you get it rolling. Newsgroup or mailing list, I'd be there, too. Sounds good to me to. I'm on a couple of e-mail groups like this. One is sponsored by One-list and is called Christianguitar. Another one is just for songwriting and is called the Christian Songwriters Group, the e-mail for that (to subscribe) is: Christian Songwriters Group
