Question:
Anyone know where to get a good used acoustic guitar cheap for a beginner? And maybe a recommendation for a type?
Answer:
I'm thinking pawn shops might have used guitars. If you’re a beginner I would recommend a Yamaha F-310, it costs about $170 brand new at Tom Lee shops. Costco Richmond has the Yamaha acoustic guitar for $160 including the hardshell case. Saw it on Sunday. Depends where you are... Long & McQuaid or Tom Lee Music both have beginner guitars... if you are around the west-side of Vancouver, Rufus's Guitar Shop (Alma near 10th) may be a little bit more expensive (maybe not), but will have the best advice and customer support. If you're stopping at Long and McQuade's I'd also recommend Not Just Another Music Shop. They do lessons and such and have some very nice inexpensive guitars for just your purpose. The best thing is that they'll give you the straight goods on what you need and why. As a musician and former guitar teacher, I'd like to warn that the cheapest guitar may not always be the best choice for a beginner. First, an inferior instrument can make it harder to learn. Think of playing hockey with a warped stick; even if you use it properly the puck may not respond the way it should. And second, really cheap guitars can be difficult to play, discouraging practice and enjoyment. All the best with whatever instrument you get!
