Any other advice on moving the piano?

Tagged As: The Piano

Question:
I have a small upright piano that needs to be moved into another room so that carpet can be fitted. No idea how heavy the thing is! Is this something that two strong men would be able to carry? There are no wheels on the piano. Any other advice on moving the piano? It will need to be moved about 8 metres and then back again once the carpet has been fitted.

Answer:
A spinet or console piano would be somewhere in the 300 to 400lb. range. If the piano has legs that touch the floor instead of a toe block...lift the front of the piano slightly before moving it away from the wall to protect the legs (especially if you have carpet). Go to a local piano store or rent-all store and rent a piano dolly...two men should be able to lift the piano and a third person can slide the dolly under the piano for easy maneuvering through the house. Keep your hands on the piano at all times when on the dolly...it's easily possible that it could tip over and hurt someone. In the following picture...a small vertical piano has been lifted from one end and the dolly is being placed in the correct position under the piano. http://tinyurl.com/295mtl On the dolly ready to move. http://tinyurl.com/22p5xm More pictures and info at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/2d8l75
