Question:
I have been trying to find out what quality of waveform samples are used in Roland JV-2080, JV-1080 and XP-30 modules and keyboard. Can you tell me if the samples are 44.1MHz 16 bit - CD quality? Is it 100% professional in today's standard?
Answer:
100% professional can mean different things to different people. I have an XP-50 (keyboard version of the 1080) and I think the sounds *I use* from them are 100% professional. The only thing that's a drag is that they make you pay more $$ for the expansion boards to get the really good sounds. That changed with the XP-30 and the 1010, and possibly their newest modules--they started building in some of the expansion boards. In terms of specs, I don't think Roland has ever provided s/n, freq. response, sampling rate etc. info, but most of the samples have, to my old ears, low noise, good bandwidth, and nice transients. You're not going to score a major film doing orchestra simulations with these keyboards, but for typical pop/r&b stuff they're fine, IMO.
