Question:
But I want to be able to hear different sounds (patches/parts/whatever) when I'm using the Kawai controller than when I'm using the Roland controller. I figured I could just use performance mode on the Roland, and for certain patches turn off local control and turn on MIDI control (for the sounds I want to control with the Kawai), and for other patches turn on local control and turn off MIDI control (for the sounds I want to control with the Roland). But this doesn't seem to be working. I really only have a limited knowledge of MIDI, but I'm 99% sure I can do this, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I will be forever indebted to anyone who can help.
Answer:
I'm no MIDI guru by any means but I don't think you can do it. The patch you choose on the XP-30 is the only patch you will hear whether or not it is selected by the XP-30 or an external device. You can't select one patch on the XP-30 and choose a different patch (on the XP-30) from another controller at the same time. I'm not sure why you need this. You CAN split the same keyboard to play different sounds/patches and you CAN set up a performance to combine different sounds/patches. Another option, would be to find a used Roland synth module to control with your Kawai.
