Question:
I saw Marjie Kennedy's notice on a radio show with a capella music for Martin Luther King, and I wondered if anyone ever made an a capella version of Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday to You?? (the song asks for a national holiday on his birthday, for those who don't understand my connection) If so, is there sheet music available? When I try and search the web too many of the ordinary happy birthday songs come up.

Answer:
Sorry -- I don't get to read this much anymore Stevie was the keynote speaker for our Martin Luther King Day Celebration. He sang Happy Birthday, and at one or two points broke away from the melody and sang what I can only describe as a very jazzy harmony part... which lead me to a couple of conclusions. 1) Stevie's version of Happy Birthday is susceptible to a cappella 2) It is probably out there. Listening to the chord progression, it seemed that there were probably easier harmony lines than the one Stevie sang briefly. In any case, the group I now sing for (Northwestern Law School's Habeas Chorus... hey, the name wasn't my idea) opened up for Stevie. I thought the whole story about Bush II waving to him at a dinner was an urban legend. Stevie made a not too subtle reference to the incident, which made me think that Bush must have indeed waved to Stevie. God Bless Our President! Keep Hope Alive.
