Question:
Suppose I want to control a Yamaha Motif Rack ES with a digital piano with good keyboard action (via MIDI). The Yamaha P70 and P140 are a couple of candidates for that, yes? The Motif Rack ES has 128-note polyphony. The P70 has 32-note polyphony and the P140 64-note. What limits the polyphony in the combination, the number of notes in the controller or the synthesizer? As far as this is concerned, would the P140 offer an advantage over the P70? And would there be any other advantage to the P140 over the P70 in this combination? A better keyboard action, for example? Or is there no difference between them? Any other possibilities I am overlooking? Comments and suggestions appreciated; thanks in advance.
Answer:
The polyphony of the keyboard, used as a controler, has no effect on the synthesizer. It will still play 128 simultaneous notes. The quality of the keyboard has little or no effect on the sound from the synth as it is only sending digital commands via mid out. With the right configuration to play both local voices plus synth voices the polyphonies would add.
