Question:
Maybe this isn't the place to ask but I've been pining for an electronic keyboard that most closely resembles a pianos sound and feel. Unfortunately I only want to spend $100. Do they make software so that you can connect a MIDI keyboard to the computer so that you can use the computer to produce a good piano sound? What might you reccommend?
Answer:
Near that price you can get a fairly realistic piano sound, but not a piano feel, and only 61 keys. Look at the Yamaha keyboards at Best Buy, etc. Look for Yamaha's Portable Grand sound and touch-sensitive keys (volume changes based on how hard you hit the keys). Best Buy has the YPT-200 for $100. Their website says it has touch-sensitive keys, but Yamaha's own website says it doesn't. The YPT-300 at $150 definitely has touch-sensitive keys. You may be able to find a used one; the Portable Grand sound has been around for several years, under numerous model numbers. They all have a button that says Portable Grand. You can get a MIDI controller, and get a piano sound out of your soundcard, with minimal software. Many soundcards now have decent piano samples. But the price will not necessarily be much lower than a standalone keyboard, and it will be a lot less convenient.
