epiphone les paul standard vs 56 goldtop

Tagged As: Epiphone Les Paul Guitar

Question:
I'm about to buy a new guitar and I've narrowed it down to either an epiphone les paul standard or epiphone les paul 56 goldtop. As far as how it plays the main difference I can see is the standard has humbuckers and the goltop has p-90's. Are the p-90's better, is there a noticable difference? Is there anything else that would make one play better than the othe

Answer:
Depends on what better means. The humbuckers sound like humbuckers, the P90s like P90s. P90s are more like a really beefy Strat sound ( no5t really, but it's more like that than the humbuckers ). Humbuckers are usually more defined sounding. Buckers sound louder, the P90s have more sparkle. Just to make it more confiusing, I have one guitar with one of each, and different makes of strings will make either pickup sound better. They'll probably play differently. All guitars do.

I own an Epi Les Paul Studio and the '56 Goldtop both. I love both but It really depends on what sound you want. The humbuckers on the standard are deeper and crunchier, they sound great with high gain and blues. the p90's are amazing for clear tone, oldies and surprisingly good for a grungy earlly 90's sound. My advise pick up the goldtop while you can then get a studio or standard later. Having both gives a lot of versatility.
